My son’s favorite color is orange and he chose to plant only orange cultivars of each item in his garden bed for the 2024 season. This was a fun and easy homeschool project for us but it gave me the idea to share a resource of garden plants that fit within a specific color scheme! Orange Flowers
Flowers were probably the easiest plant to fit in this category. There are many wonderful varieties of blooming and blossoming plants to add to your garden space not just for aesthetic, but also to support your population of local pollinators.
Orange Vegetables
Okay, tomatoes may technically be a fruit, but as vegetable gardeners we mostly consider it one of the staple home-grown veggies (it’s listed under ‘vegetables’ on many of the seed vendor websites, so there.) This is another plant that boasted no shortage of orange varieties! All of these I have grown myself and love to include in our seed starting plan every year.
Orange Fruits
There weren’t many tangerine-hued plants in this category but the humble salmonberry shouldn’t be overlooked! Their tart-sweet flavor is a wonderful addition to any berry patch or perennial garden, and any home food preserver will appreciate their unique flavor in jams, jellies, preserves and pies. I love to include native plants in my growing space and this was a favorite of Native Americans and settlers alike.
Orange Herbs
I included this category as a bonus because no garden is complete without herbs! While some of these aren’t actually orange-colored you will be pleasantly surprised by their citrusy flavor.
We have just gotten past our last frost date and have planted Leroy’s own Garden of Orange out in his bed. I can’t wait to see it in full bloom!
